As time passes the teeth within your dentures, and also your jawbone and gums, will start to wear away and become shorter. This can make your face appear shorter as well, giving you an older and more wrinkled appearance. There could be creases, wrinkles and lines around your lips, mouth, under your lower lip and at the corners of your mouth.

The new dentures we create will offset these losses and re-establish the correct dimensions to your face. You will be startled at the amount of change that you will see in a short space of time. “I had dentures for 35 years. We went to the state fair this year and I had taffy and a candy apple for the first time! I forget that they’re there (my new teeth). I was actually able to bite into an apple. Before having implants, my lowers wouldn’t allow biting into an apple. I would have to cut it up into slices, and then chew it up that way.

Since getting the implants I’ve been able to approach food without any caution. To get a Big Mac, you know, with the little sesame seeds. When they would get underneath your teeth you’d find yourself saying “ok, how am I going to gracefully get that seed out of there without anybody knowing what I’m doing”. If you yawn, for instance, you no longer have to worry about your lower denture popping up on you…and then suddenly covering your mouth with your hand. Examples of Problems with Dentures and their Solutions:

Problem #1: An “aging” face showing lines all around the mouth, exaggerated creases at the corners of the mouth, sagging cheeks and a deep crease between the lower lip and the chin.

Solution: Cosmetic Dentures… How can dentures improve the aging face? They re-establish the cheek and lip support that has been lost. Also, they “open up” the bite, increasing the vertical height lost because of the wearing away of the chewing surfaces on the dentures (the back teeth are flat due to the wear) and the loss of bone density beneath the dentures. Cosmetic Dentures are created first in wax, providing you with an opportunity to try them out. At this “try-in” we can adjust the tooth size, whiteness or tooth position, or even alter the denture to be longer, fuller, wider or smaller, giving you that “special personalized look” and correcting any facial support has been lost over time. Problem #2: Poor bone support on the ridge underneath your upper or lower denture. Does your denture move about when you talk, eat or laugh? Do you have problems eating the “crunchy” foods that you love?

Solution: Implant Supported Permanent Teeth can be utilized to permanently and strongly secure a denture or partial so that it can’t move or get food under it. Problem #3: Dentures have been worn for MANY years and much of the bone has worn away. Many patients in this situation insist they can chew better without the lower denture in their mouth than with it. Restricted diet, sore mouth, the list goes on and on… A lot of patients we see have been informed they can’t have traditional implants.

Solution: Mini-Implants. These implants of a smaller dimension can be placed in areas of great bone loss where regular implants can’t. “Mini’s” can be placed in a location with as little as a 3-4 mm width of bone. They also offer a cheaper way to solve your denture problems. We’ve even used mini’s to stabilize a partial denture that simply won’t “Stay Down”. Problem #4: Loose or sore teeth past the point of saving.

Solution: Immediate Dentures. Immediate dentures are used for patients whose teeth have become loose or sore and can no longer be saved because of tooth decay or periodontal disease. Removing the teeth and replacing them with a denture could be the best way to prevent infection and to restore health to the mouth. An immediate denture is created in advance and placed within the mouth on the same day as the extractions. Once the mouth has fully healed the immediate denture is realigned and adjusted to fit comfortably within your mouth. An advantage of immediate dentures is that the patient won’t be without teeth throughout the healing period. However, bones and gums can sometimes shrink over time, especially during a period of healing within the initial six months after the removal of teeth. When gums shrink, immediate dentures could require rebasing or realigning to fit correctly. No need to cover up your smile!
